Sounds like the device error is in the software.I am using Roxio Creator 2010 and am up to date on patches. Output that project to a mpg2 file (or blu-ray or AVCHD if that is what you are doing). My DVD/CD burner is internal. The production plays just fine when I watch it in its entirety in both VideoWave and within MyDVD; however, it keeps failing with the following error message: An unrecoverable device error check my blog

Last night, I watched it and it got to 91% then it failed. To burn another copy of the DVD, insert another writeable DVD, and then return to step 6. Please try the request again. In the past, I haven't had problems doing this. Other times, it couldn't even open the project and would just lock up. If the project encodes properly, then just use that file in Create DVD (MyDVD).
